Bison Under the Stars

 
 

Students will have the opportunity to touch artifacts related to the fur trade, learn about the Indigenous Peoples of the area, and explore stories from the Columbia Express Brigade. In addition, students will take home a beautiful bison art piece they made.

Cost: $5 per participant
Duration: 2 hours

 

Curriculum Outcomes

  • Social 4.2.1:

    Appreciate how an understanding of Alberta’s history, peoples, and stories contributes to their sense of belonging and identity.

    • Learn different stories of Indigenous, Métis, and European explorers during the fur trade.

    Social 4.2.2:

    Assess, critically, how the cultural and linguistic heritage and diversity of Alberta have evolved.

    • Students will see how the status of Indigenous people changed throughout the fur trade.

    Social 4.3.3:

    Examine, critically, Alberta’s changing cultural and social dynamics.

    • Students will take part in a discussion about how the land shaped the culture in the area and the people who used it. They will also have the opportunity to touch historic items from different cultures that have been used in the area.

    Develop skills in critical thinking and creative thinking.

    • Students will hear legends and verified accounts of the fur trade.

    Social 4.S.2:

    Develop skills of historical thinking.

    • Students will critically examine historical accounts and understand the context of the fur trade.

    Art Level 2, Composition:

    • Students will develop a sense of composition by bringing each component of their painting together for a final piece.

    Art Level 2, Media and Techniques, Painting:

    • Students will paint their project as well as cut various components.

    • Students will learn about the complexity of fur trade society.

    Social 5.2.2:

    Examine critically the ways of life of Aboriginal people in Canada by exploring and reflecting.

    • Students will learn how Indigenous people were involved in the fur trade.

    Social 5.2.4:

    Examine critically the ways of life of fur traders by exploring and reflecting.

    • Students will learn about local Métis guides during the fur trade and their connection to European explorers.

    Social 5.S.1:

    Develop skills of critical thinking and creative thinking.

    • Students will hear of local significant events in the fur trade.

Museum Team Work

Challenge your students to work together while solving problems related to the museum tour—except not one person has all the information!
