History And Stars
Explore how we saw, see, experience, and use the sky above us. This 1-hour talk covers light, sextants, and telescopes. Students will handle sextants and learn the basics of their use to collect light from heavenly bodies and compare it with earthly vistas. The session includes a comparison of how voyageurs and astronauts use technology to understand their world using the sky.
Museum Mystery
Solve the mystery of who stole David Thompson’s sextant before time runs out! Engage in puzzles, a crime scene investigation, and explore historical references to Hinton in the 1920s.
Storytelling Within The Stars
Learn about traditional Indigenous storytelling practices and uses. Students will create their own creation legend using story dice and then will learn about an Indigenous creation story found within a constellation. After hearing the story, they will make a 3-D diorama of the Indigenous story to take home.
Fur Trading Game
Step back in time and become a fur trader in Canada’s past! Target shoot with dart guns to collect furs and trade them for resources at the trading post. Watch out for the North West Mounted Police as they hunt down thieves. Learn how the roles of Indigenous people changed throughout the fur trade. A fast-paced game that teaches your class about the fur trade through role-play and fun!
History Savers
Take an in-depth and hands-on look at the people behind the scenes at museums. Encapsulate a photograph, sculpt an artifact, test your memory, and design a museum for your classroom!
Becoming a Botanist
Learn about the first botanist who traveled through the Hinton area over 200 years ago. Discover his day-to-day struggles and adventures within the pages of his journal and get hands-on training to become a botanist just like him. Activities include: plant dissection, plant part identification, and planting a seed to take home.
My First Museum
Explore local history and beyond within the exhibits of the Northern Rockies Museum. Learn about the original functions of the building and what day-to-day life was like in Hinton’s early days. Enjoy coloUrful stories from our area throughout our ever-changing exhibits. Spark curiosity and wonder with hands-on learning opportunities.
Bison Under the Stars
Students will have the opportunity to touch artifacts related to the fur trade, learn about the Indigenous Peoples of the area, and explore stories from the Columbia Express Brigade. In addition, students will take home a beautiful bison art piece they made.
