After being decommissioned by VIA Rail, the station was acquired by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Station House Preservation Society for just $1. Over the course of nearly 15 years, dedicated volunteers meticulously restored the building, stripping away old lathe, plaster, and outdated electrical fixtures. The museum officially opened its doors on May 20, 2017, marking the culmination of this labor of love.

The museum is not just a repository of local artifacts but also a testament to broader historical narratives. One notable exhibit is a segregated train car from Kentucky, dating back to around 1912. Although this car has no direct connection to the Hinton area, it carries significant historical weight, having been used to enforce Jim Crow laws in the United States for many decades. The car later became part of Fort Edmonton's original rolling stock in the 1970s, and now it stands as a poignant reminder of a troubled past.
