About Us
We work to collect and share the history of our incredible region.
The Northern Rockies Museum of Culture and Heritage is located in beautiful Hinton, Alberta, on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. We are located in Hinton’s original train station and work to collect and share the history of our incredible region.
Nestled in the heart of Hinton, the Northern Rockies Museum of Culture and Heritage offers a unique glimpse into the town's rich history. The museum is housed in the original train station, built in 1911 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. This historic building served as a key hub for rail travel from 1911 to 1917 and then again from 1927 until 2003. After being decommissioned by VIA Rail, the station was acquired by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Station House Preservation Society for just $1. Over the course of nearly 15 years, dedicated volunteers meticulously restored the building, stripping away old lathe, plaster, and outdated electrical fixtures. The museum officially opened its doors on May 20, 2017, marking the culmination of this labor of love.
The museum is not just a repository of local artifacts but also a testament to broader historical narratives. One notable exhibit is a segregated train car from Kentucky, dating back to around 1912. Although this car has no direct connection to the Hinton area, it carries significant historical weight, having been used to enforce Jim Crow laws in the United States for many decades. The car later became part of Fort Edmonton's original rolling stock in the 1970s, and now it stands as a poignant reminder of a troubled past.
Visitors to the Northern Rockies Museum can expect more than just a static display of artifacts. The museum's tours are particularly praised for their engaging and interactive approach. Staff members are committed to creating a welcoming environment that sparks curiosity, encourages creativity, and deepens understanding of historical events. The museum features exhibits on Hinton's early development, its industrial heritage, and the natural history of the surrounding area, all brought to life through portable tablet displays and tactile experiences.
As the oldest building in Hinton, the former train station also tells its own story. Originally designed to accommodate a section gang, a station agent, and their families, the station was a bustling center of activity, ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of the railroad. Today, the museum invites visitors to explore this rich heritage, whether through a personalized tour, a picnic on the museum grounds, or hands-on activities in the garden and on the deck. The Northern Rockies Museum of Culture and Heritage is more than just a historical site—it's a vibrant space where the stories of Hinton's past come alive.
